Precode vs Serial Number

๐Ÿ“… Updated 2026โฑ 5 min readโœ… Practical guide

A precode is a short identifier displayed by many Renault and Dacia radios. A serial number is a longer unique identifier printed on the physical radio label or sometimes shown on the display.

Quick answer: identify the exact radio input required by your unit before entering any code. Renault and Dacia usually use a precode; Ford usually uses a serial number.

How to unlock it safely

Renault, Dacia and some Nissan radios often use a precode such as A123. Ford radios usually use M, V, BP or Travelpilot serials.

  1. Turn the ignition on and power the radio.
  2. Display or read the precode/serial number.
  3. Use the correct calculator for that input format.
  4. Enter the four digit code carefully and confirm it.

Important notes

Use the right calculator for the right input. A Renault precode and a Ford serial number are not interchangeable.

Warning: avoid repeated random attempts. Many OEM radios lock temporarily after several wrong codes.

When the online method may not work

The calculator method is intended for supported OEM units. It may not work for aftermarket radios, VIN-paired multimedia systems, damaged displays, locked dealer-only units or radios that have already been replaced with a different model.
