Radio Locked After Battery Change

๐Ÿ“… Updated 2026โฑ 5 min readโœ… Practical guide

A locked radio after a battery change is normal. The unit lost power and activated its anti-theft protection. It now needs the original radio security code.

Quick answer: identify the exact radio input required by your unit before entering any code. Renault and Dacia usually use a precode; Ford usually uses a serial number.

How to unlock it safely

Do not try random codes. First identify whether your radio uses a Renault/Dacia precode, a Ford serial number or another manufacturer-specific system. Then calculate or retrieve the correct code and enter it once.

  1. Turn the ignition on and power the radio.
  2. Display or read the precode/serial number.
  3. Use the correct calculator for that input format.
  4. Enter the four digit code carefully and confirm it.

Important notes

Keep the code saved after unlocking. You will need the same code again if the battery is disconnected in the future.

Warning: avoid repeated random attempts. Many OEM radios lock temporarily after several wrong codes.

When the online method may not work

The calculator method is intended for supported OEM units. It may not work for aftermarket radios, VIN-paired multimedia systems, damaged displays, locked dealer-only units or radios that have already been replaced with a different model.
